Comments Only -
Taped and written comments only. Ensemble receives participation plaque.
Festival Rating
– Taped comments and score sheets with Roman Numeral evaluations where “I” is “Superior, “II” is
“Excellent,” “III” is “Good,” etc. Ensemble receives trophy indicating overall Rating
earned.
Competition
– Taped comments and score sheets with standard numerals. Ensemble receives first through fifth-place
trophy and is eligible for any other applicable competitive awards. Each ensemble
selecting “Competition” also receives a Festival Rating indicated by an engraved plate on its ranking trophy.
Divisions for Concert Bands: High School concert
bands/wind ensembles may choose a division based on the difficulty grade of the music
performed (gr. 3 through gr. 6), or may choose “Open Division” to perform any grade of
music. Junior high school and middle school bands will be placed in the “JR” division.
Divisions for Mixed Chorus / Concert Choir: Divisions
for high school groups are determined by school enrollment for the grades eligible for
the ensemble. Division “A” is for enrollment less than 600. Division “AA” is for 601
to 1200, and Division “AAA” is for enrollment over 1200. Junior high school and middle
school choruses will be placed in the “JR” division.
A school entering two mixed choruses may enter the second group in one division
lower than its first group, provided the personnel are totally different.
Divisions for All Other Events: High school
ensembles will be entered in the “Open Division” and junior high / middle school
ensembles will be in the “JR” division.
Adjudicators: Three adjudicators of national
stature will evaluate each group’s performance by offering written and cassette-taped
comments. Different panels of judges are used for instrumental and choral adjudications.
Performance Schedule: The schedule is organized so
that in most cases groups will be performing with others in the same division of the
same event. In general, all concert adjudications are held on Friday, with concert
bands or orchestras in the morning and afternoon, choruses in the afternoon and possibly
the evening, ending with jazz choirs and show choirs, and jazz ensembles in the evening.
The parade is typically Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m.. At large festivals, there may
be concert adjudications continuing on Saturday morning to early afternoon, or there
may be two different venues in use on Friday. Please consult with N.A.M.F. regarding
the specifics of your chosen festival.
Conductor Scores for Adjudicators:
Avoid Disqualification! Each ensemble MUST furnish
THREE sets of published, full scores with the measures
numbered of each selection performed for adjudicatin. Scores which are photocopied
without an official letter from the publisher allowing photocopying violate copyright
law and are NOT acceptable! Scores are not required for warm-up selections or the Parade
event.

CLINICS
In the interest of promoting and enhancing the educational value of its Festivals,
N.A.M.F. offers to each Director an optional on-stage mini-clinic following the
performance in the concert band, orchestra, jazz ensemble, and choral ensemble events.
Each inspiring clinic will be offered by one of the adjudicators for the particular
event. The clinic will be an optional inclusion at no extra cost, and at the discretion
of the director.
